When designing our weighted sleepwear, our team was determined to find a solution that could help with sleep while also better addressing young infants’ abilities to freely roll over and flip back, lift or push up their shoulders. This inspired our design's gradual approach to the weight distribution.

Specifically, this meant minimal weight in the upper chest region near the neck and shoulders. The gradual increase of gentle weight begins below the child’s arms and spans across the rest of their body while maintaining an evenly distributed weight at or below 10% of a child’s total weight.

Incorporating the gentle weight into a suit design is fundamental in assuring that it will not ride up and obstruct breathing when worn properly. But this also provides the opportunity of applying a strategically targeted placement of weight to better set the stage for your little one’s extended comfort throughout the night.

When it comes to safety testing the materials of our products, we hold our Dear Mama sleepwear to the highest standards and have exceeded those of the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission. For a list of all safety tests performed, visit "What testing procedures have been performed?" on our FAQ page.

weight-free feet.

Speaking of targeted weight, we felt it was important to keep the weight off your child's feet for a few reasons. Not many people enjoy sleeping with weight pushing down on their feet. It’s just not comfortable which is why most people kick their feet out or end up shifting their feet and legs outward to avoid the unwanted pressure. Why would babies be any different? Aside from the discomfort, the resulting positions night after night could result in concerns for their hip health. So, we avoid it all together.

Additionally, during our R&D process we found that when weighted, the typical gown design risks excessive bottom weight twisting at the base as a child rolls, again adding unhealthy pressure around their hips. It was important to create a way that kept their feet free and allowed the suit to more easily move with your little one so as to not jeopardize their comfort or safety.

material matters.

In addition to our careful design, we sought out the best materials to ensure product safety, quality, and comfort. We’ve incorporated 70% bamboo into our bamboo-cotton blend not only for it’s buttery-soft touch, but because of its additional benefits as well. The natural fibers in bamboo are moisture wicking and enable essential airflow, in fact, it is one of the most breathable and absorbent plant-based materials. We believe this is the best option for keeping your little one comfortable and prevent overheating while using the gentle weighted system. The inner poly beads used are non-toxic and do not give off harmful chemicals, they are hypoallergenic and easy to clean.

safe sleep practices always recommended.

Always, always, always use safe sleep practices. Of course keeping loose blankets and pillows outside of the crib is highly encouraged as a common practice in safe sleep, as well as plush bumpers and toys.  We also highly recommend you dressing your child appropriately for the temperature they're in. You can find that guide here on our FAQ page.

When it comes to wearing the Dear Mama sleep suit, or any type for that matter, please make sure the garment is never used without securing it to your child. This can mean having them wear Dear Mama front-facing or backwards, as long as it is zipped in its proper place. We also recommend you use the appropriate size for your child. You can find the size guides for each product on their product pages when shopping.

Additionally, according to recognized safe sleep practices, it is recommended your baby sleep on their back. Once your baby is strong enough to roll themselves onto their side or stomach, you can opt to leave them in that position. Never use the swaddle feature of our small Sleep Sacks once your baby is showing signs of rolling. As always, we want to promote total mobility for them in the case they do roll over and need to roll back or lift up.
